Loop Head’s location between a vast intercontinental ocean and a busy trading river means its identity has been moulded by an unusually rich maritime and military history. In addition, the peninsula suffered some of the worst effects of the Famine and the Penal Laws, and evidence of the community’s struggles during those dark times still remains. You’ll find reminders of Loop Head’s colourful history and heritage all over the peninsula. A newly established heritage trail has been created in association with the Heritage Council, Clare County Council and the Wild Atlantic Way (WAW).
