Ecological Protected Sites

The three main types of designation are:

  • Natural Heritage Area (NHA)
  • Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
  • Special Protection Area (SPA)

Natural Heritage Area

The basic designation for wildlife is the Natural Heritage Area (NHA). This is an area considered important for the habitats present and biodiversity or which holds species of plants and animals whose habitat needs protection.

Special Areas of Conservation

These are prime wildlife conservation areas in the country, considered to be important on a European as well as Irish level.More information on the National heritage Parks and Wildlife Service website...

Special Protection Areas

Because birds migrate long distances, it is not sufficient to protect them over just part of their range, so the EU Birds Directive provides for a network of sites in all Member States to protect birds at their breeding, feeding, roosting and wintering areas. It identifies species which are rare, in danger of extinction or vulnerable to changes in habitat and which need protection.More information on the National Parks and Wildlife Service website...

The sea surrounding the island, to a distance of 200 m, where seabirds forage, bathe and socialise, is included in the site. The grassland is dominated by Red Fescue (Festuca rubra), with a variety of typical maritime plants such as Thrift (Armeria maritima), Sea Campion (Silene vulgaris subsp. maritima) and Sea Mayweed (Matricaria maritima).
